Appendix 1 – Interview Transcript
Why did you decide to use a device for this particular exam?
It was a hand-written test exam and I was just stressed about doing poorly, so thought of a way to make sure I wouldn’t fail I suppose
Did you ever consider / had you ever used a device before this particular exam?
No
What device did you use, and why? Can you describe it? E.g. Size, how it was hidden, how it was powered
iPad nano, earphone went up my sleeve and the earpiece sat in my hand (which I then lent on)
How did the setup work during the exam? E.g. Did you record answers, did someone feed them to you? Was it connected via Bluetooth, a mobile phone, or some other means?
Recorded the written piece slowly so I could listen to it whilst I wrote it down
Did you rehearse or test the device beforehand?
No I just had it in case I got stuck and it didn’t work that well because I still recorded it a bit too quickly haha
Were there invigilators or surveillance during the exam? Were you ever close to getting caught?
Teacher at the front of the class but it wasn’t a “formal” exam
Did you find it effective? Did anyone notice or find out later?
It worked, yes, ironically though I knew what I was writing at a faster pace than the recording in my ear, so I probably didn’t need it
What precautions did you take, if any, to avoid detection?
It went up my sleeve so if I was concerned about anyone seeing I could just pull my sleeve over my hand
How did you feel during the exam?
Stressed, probably more stressed because I was cheating ha!

Where did the idea of using this device in your exam come from?
Randomly thought of it
Did you have a backup plan if the device failed or if you were discovered?
The likelihood of being discovered was slim since it wasn’t a formal exam and more of a class test in preparation for the real thing. But I also knew I could write the piece without the support, just probably did it to feel a bit less anxious (I hated exams)
